Oh my goodness, what a poignant story! While this is a story of grief and attempting to move on from the death of a sibling (set three years subsequently the death), it's also sweet and so, and so REAL. Thanks to @kidlitexchange for the review copy of this book! All opinions are my own.Oh my goodness, what a poignant story! While this is a story of grief and attempting to move on from the decease of a sibling (set 3 years later on the death), information technology'southward as well sweet and and so, so Existent. I adore how Amelia gets direct upwardly mad and crabby at times and shows her anger so clearly ~ we know she's angry because she's grieving, but it's but so nice to finally meet a middle grade book that shows grief doesn't stop inside a certain period of time after a death, and also that sometimes it only makes people mad......and that's okay. I also very much appreciate that Holt addresses how Amelia's parent DID autumn autonomously subsequently Clara died, and that they aren't 100% okay still either. The friendships shown in the book are great and I love the science-loving side of Amelia.
BONUS: for teachers/parents looking for books that are virtually upper centre schoolers merely AREN'T about crushes, sex, drugs and all things mature ~ this 1 is most as innocent as a book can go while still portraying an eighth grader in a realistic fashion. Also, the brevity of the novel is appreciated and will appeal to many, many tween and early teen readers.
Highly recommended for all libraries serving students grades vi-8!

I admittedly LOVED this book! While at times it became a scrap dry and ho-hum, Thou.A. Holt has an excellent manner of conveying the action throughout the story. She describes the 8th grade scenery well, and does a good job beingness realistic about Amelia'a character. This four star book on goodreads, with well-nigh 481 reviews volition accident your mind.

From Y'all to Me was a touching story nigh a daughter living with her grief over her sis's death. The characters were bully -- I loved Mrs. Grant and all the fun grilled cheeses. Twitch and his friends were as well great. And I also loved that Amelia'due south dad dealt with his grief past quitting his job and starting a food truck.Merely this was not a story about Amelia going through and completing Clara's list.

3 years after Clara dies, her younger sister Amelia is however drowning in grief. When the eighth grader finds a letter with Clara's goals, Amelia sets out to practice the things her sister never could. With the help of her best friend's grandmother and a few friends, Amelia learns to manage her grief.Through Amelia'due south story, KA Holt does a groovy task showing readers that grief doesn't accept an end appointment, just that through time and difficult work, it can become manageable. FROM Y'all TO ME is different from other stories nigh death because despite being three years afterwards Clara's death, Amelia's pain is still intense. She notwithstanding bursts into tears frequently at inconvenient times, for example.
Amelia is such a relatable character, even for those who oasis't experienced such profound grief. She wants to exercise the right thing, just frequently fails. She wants to be a expert friend and sometimes fails. She's flawed and lovable at the same time, as are her friends. Every kid needs a Mrs Grant in her life.
FROM YOU TO ME is a must add for classrooms, libraries and therapists' offices.

This was a fast read that is completely a MG book. I am excited to exist able to head back to school and book talk this with some classes, especially in grades half dozen and 7. *It does bargain with death/grief, then make sure to keep that in mind when recommending it to readers.*Amelia is tired of being the "girl with a expressionless sister" only there's no changing it. No affair what, she can't go dorsum 3 years. Can't alter her sis getting in the canoe at the lake. Tin't modify her last words to her ("I detest you; I never want to see you once again!"). Can't change the look Clara's best friends had when they rushed out of the water and said she had gone under.
But at present, at the start of 8th grade, her ancient English instructor accidentally gives her CLARA'S alphabetic character to herself from sixth grade. And reading the list of things that Clara wanted to achieve gives Amelia an thought. Perhaps working through the listing will help her feel closer to her sister and assist her find some way to begin to make peace with what happened. So, Amelia is determined to attempt them all, from request Billy (later on she figures out who Billy is) to a dance to trying out for the softball team (if she ever learns how to throw the brawl). Plus, she needs to come up upward with an 8th grade prank. And try to piece of work things out with her parents.
This was a touching story virtually dealing with grief and trying to find your identify in your family when everything has been turned upside down. Completely advisable for grades five-8. Highly recommend for readers who are interested in realistic fiction of whatever kind.

Amelia has been carrying around her sister-shaped pigsty for three years, and on the first day of eighth grade, she received a letter from her 6th grade sister filled with all her 8th grade goals. She knew she would always comport some pain within her, but she wanted people to talk to her and care for her normally.
The list was a smashing starter for Ameila's healing process, simply information technology was the support of her friends and family unit that actually helped her process all her emotions. I cried a agglomeration, and at that place were some actually beautiful moments towards the end that really stood out for me.

I wasn't sure what kind of story to wait when I started reading this novel. I was intrigued by a younger sister completing a "wish listing" from her older sister who had passed in a tragic blow while at the same time learning to cope with the grief of her sister's passing. In the end, I was close to tears, seeing how Amelia was able to acquire how to cope and go along living, with aid from old and new friends.
Here's a few quotes I liked from the book...
When asked if the pain of losing someone will ever feel improve, Mrs. Grant answers: "The pain will lesson over time. I promise. Only information technology will e'er be with you lot. This grief is part of you now, Amelia. It's the thread that quilts together every other part of your life....I can't hope information technology will become better, only I tin can promise it volition be different over time."
"No...I'm saying that people tin can be mad at each other and they can forgive each other and they tin be mad at each other once again and they can do stupid things and they tin do smart things. Holt, K. A. From Y'all To Me, 208 pages. Scholastic Press, JUNE 2018. $17. Content: G.Amelia is starting the 8th grade three years after her older sister, Clara, died in a pitiful accident on the lake in their small-scale boondocks. Amelia decides that possibly fulfilling Clara's list will help her cease hurting so much. Amelia is going to get some surprises.
Am I just now noticing this proliferation of 12/13 year old girls who are filled with angst and anxiety? Holt does a much better task than some I have read lately in skating the line between girl who has issues she can eventually grow with vs girl who needs deep psychiatric care and in-facility intendance. Is till want more than books about boys who deal with tough issues too. I'm tired of girls ever being the neurotic ones.

This is the story of Amelia. Her older sister, Clara, drowned three years agone. Amelia is still unbelievably deplorable just tries to fake it and get along with her life. She's entering 8th course and mistakenly, her teacher gives her a letter her sister had written to herself. It was all the things she had planned to do that twelvemonth, only was never able to. And then Amelia tries to consummate her sister's list.

Sometimes you read a book (no matter what age it was meant for) and think, "This is meant for ME to read."This is the story of Amelia. Her older sister, Clara, drowned iii years agone. Amelia is nonetheless unbelievably sorry merely tries to imitation it and get along with her life. She's entering 8th course and mistakenly, her teacher gives her a letter her sister had written to herself. It was all the things she had planned to do that year, but was never able to. Then Amelia tries to complete her sister's list.
I just finished the volume and have a raging headache from crying so much. Lines like, "The hurting will lessen over time just information technology volition always exist a part of you" and "I can't promise it volition get ameliorate, merely I tin can hope it will be different over time." People have said some of these things to me over this past year and I couldn't always hear them, but I'm finally listening at present and know that these are truths.
...moreAmelia'southward sister Clara passed away 3 years agone but it yet hurts her to this twenty-four hour period. Amelia was e'er a happy girl and never struggled with being sorry. Clara passed away in a boating blow. Once Clara passed abroad Amelia hasn't felt the aforementioned, grief and pain drag her down all solar day, equally she wishes that her sister was nevertheless with her. The author uses several examples of figurative language throughout this office of the volume. In gild to describe the truthful pain that Amelia is going though she compares Amelia'southward feelings to other things that are happening around the world. She tried to exist happy, and terminate feeling the pain, merely focus on herself, but she couldn't. Throughout the book, Amelia learns to gain her confidence back and learns to take faith in herself again. She listens to her emotions, instead of ever tuning them out. She embraces what happened in the best fashion she could, and uses it every bit an opportunity to grow. Amelia learned that her sis wouldn't take wanted her to live in grief for the residual of her life. She would take wanted Amelia to be the aforementioned manner she e'er had been, outgoing, adventurous, and ready for annihilation. The author produces a very happy and full general idea towards the end of the book, talking near how she has created this amazing life, merely she will however always think her old memories. But this is not the but example of Amelia growing throughout the story, she overcomes many obstacles and achievements. She becomes a happier version of herself and doesn't environment herself in grief anymore. This book especially intrigued me considering I honey the character development within Amelia. She started off as going through such a hard time and developed into a much ameliorate life and surrounding.
Amelia was heading off to the commencement day, not in the best mood. Still devastated from her sister'southward passing, Amelia didn't want to be known as the girl whose sis died, but surprisingly when she got to school everything was going well. The author used a lot of syntax throughout this part of the book. She reworded the same sentence over and over again, almost to make it seems like Amelia was confused and trying to figure out what was the right matter to say. Once Amelia arrived at her schoolhouse she went to her seat in the dorsum row, as everyone had stared her down the aisle. Amelia found a letter sitting on the desk-bound. On the exterior of this letter of the alphabet said "Amelia''. Could this be an apology letter from her teacher? Amelia had no clue. She opened the letter and within was Clara'due south note that she wrote to her future cocky. In the envelope was a long listing stating all the things that Clara wanted to do before she finished heart school. As Amelia read through the list, tears built upwardly in her optics. She knew something would bring her downward, but she just wished information technology wasn't on the starting time mean solar day of center school. Equally she read through the list information technology made her sadder, and sadder. Amelia felt obligated to end this list for Clara, doing everything that she had ever wanted to do for her. The plot of the book, while Amelia struggles to finish this list helps the reader feel more interested equally we follow Amelia through her journey, and watch her struggle, but then fight dorsum. Towards the terminate of the book, the writer about rewinds the story to go over all the new memories that Amelia has made, and Amelia looks dorsum and is proud of herself for what she has overcome. This is one of my favorite parts of the book considering it truly shows how Amelia has grown throughout the story, and regain her self-love. Amelia had finally found something to stay connected to her, something to remember her, but not in a sad way. This is non the only instance of Amelia finding new connections to her sister. Throughout the story, she realized that both her and her sister had much more than in mutual than she has always realized. The author chose the topic of the list for Amelia to accomplish, to remind Amelia of both the good and the bad, that comes with losing a close relative.
These struggles throughout the book are what make such a powerful story. In From You lot To Me by Chiliad.A. Holt, the author produces a very powerful message to the reader. This book is a sorry volume most a young girl who overcomes many obstacles and ends up happier than she ever was. 1000.A. Holt is a tremendous author who has written about so many different topics. She lived in Florida for a large period of her life and then moved to Dallas when she was a bit older. She experienced many things along her journey which gave her both passion and ideas to write. The things she was stuck with her and inspired her to write more. She loved to look out windows, and ever listen to music, these things inspired her, gave her energy, and a passion to write. K.A. Holt took this volume very heartfelt because it had a special connection to her, she didn't specify exactly what is it, but she went through something like this and wanted to express her emotions about it.
...moreA heartwarming read most learning to move forward from loss. It's a little anticipated, but at that place were moments I really liked Amelia's vox and even laughed out loud because of her quips. I appreciated the focus on family and friendship dynamics, but I was mostly hungry for a grilled cheese the whole time.
Actual rating: 3.vA heartwarming read almost learning to move forward from loss. It's a petty predictable, but there were moments I really liked Amelia's voice and even laughed out loud because of her quips. I appreciated the focus on family and friendship dynamics, but I was generally hungry for a grilled cheese the whole time.
...more thanThe story is from Amelia's perspective. Her sis, Clara, died 3 years ago, in a canoeing accident, and Amelia hasn't been able to discover peace. Her friends endeavour to assist her, but their efforts backfire, until, for some unrealistic, unknown reason, Amelia snaps out of it.
Hither are some of the plot points I found particularly frustrating.
one. At the starting time of the year, the instructor gives each student a letter they wrote the previous yr describing the things they hope to accomplish. Amelia accidentally gets Clara's letter. They weren't in the same class, so how does this happen? Convenient, but unrealistic.
2. Amelia decides to accomplish Clara'southward goals. This is a flimsy idea on which to build a story. For example, Clara wanted to make the baseball squad, so Amelia, who doesn't play baseball, decides to train and tryout for the team. This is an unrealistic way to honor someone's memory.
3. Twitch, a friend of Clara, and now Amelia, is making a pebble mural in the woods in Clara'south award. Would this actually happen 3 years after her sister's death? If so, there is not enough development of Clara'south grapheme to justify so many people going to such lengths in her retentiveness.
4. Through the whole book Amelia has an issue with existence at the lake. While working off a debt at her dad'south BBQ truck, which happens to be at the lake, her sister's friends come in, say a few squeamish things, and all of a sudden Amelia no longer has a problem with the lake. Past the end of the book she's jumping in the lake. Poor writing is all I can say.
5. Don't get me started on the undeveloped and last infinitesimal prank idea.
half dozen. Don't get me started on the fact that the particulars of the canoeing accident are never explained.
Here'southward a list of much ameliorate books on expiry and grief.
